The arc of our story begins at a time about 40 years ago, after the US Army Corps of Engineers first developed the MicroPAVER program in 1979 to enable the computerized management of airside pavements.
In the early 80’s a bright young Civil & computer engineering consultant, GoodPointe co-founder and CEO Darwin Dahlgren became the first private consultant to implement the MicroPAVER pavement management program for US Air Force bases located throughout Europe. To augment the lack of analysis and reporting capability of MicroPAVER for local governmental agencies, Darwin implemented an integrated set of software tools, for his Chicago-based engineering consulting company.
As the need for a more robust, user-friendly, user-centric pavement and related asset management infrastructure program for local governmental agencies became apparent, Darwin led the development and launch of a new asset management program called InfrastructureCONsultant (ICON) in 1992 along with Tony Kadlec at a Minneapolis-based engineering firm.
In 1999 Darwin and Tony spun-out GoodPointe Technology as an independent company, starting operations out of Darwin’s spacious boyhood home in South Minneapolis. To counter the lack of central air conditioning, we opened our windows for the summer breeze and were treated to the sounds of children playing in the neighborhood. For important summertime conference calls, however, we had to shut the windows (for noise reasons) and sweat it out until the calls were done. By the next year GoodPointe world headquarters were established in the Lowertown warehouse district of downtown St. Paul, Minnesota.
As our North American client base grew, so did our reputation for delivering comprehensive roadway and related asset management software and integrated data collection services to consulting companies and governmental clients in other continents around the world.
If there is a moral to our story it is this: we believe our clients are the experts at what they do; trust and listen to their suggestions and do not take offense to the occasional critical feedback. Harness their great ideas and develop them into the ICON software and then make ALL of those features available to ALL of our clients.
